摘要

Samoa (Western) comprises nine islands in the Pacific, with a land area of 2934 km~2. Its population is 200 000 (June 2006), of whom 21 per cent live in urban and semi-urban areas. Only four of the islands are inhabited, of which Upolu and Savaii are by far the largest. The capital, Apia, is on Upolu. The annual average precipitation is 6000 to 7000 mm/year. The total water storage is 10 × 10~6 m~3, all of which is at the Afulilo dam, which was constructed to supply the 4 MW Taelefaga power station. No land is at present under irrigation. Per capita water consumption is about 600 litres/day in urban areas and 800 litres/day in rural areas.
