摘要

Sri Lanka is an island with a total surface area of 65 610 km~2 including inland waters, and a population of about 20.1 million (June 2007). A national body for water resources management in the country has been proposed. This body will act as the umbrella institution for different users in the water sector. Discussions are also underway on privatization of the existing organizations in this sector. Only 14 per cent of the rural population has access to piped water, in comparison with 75 per cent of the urban population. The per capita water consumption in urban areas and in rural areas is 180 litres/day and 140 litres/day respectively.
