Tanzania has an area of 945 234 km~2 and a population of about 37.9 million (June 2006). The Ministry of Water is in charge of water resources. There are currently five large dams in operation, two of which are concrete structures. The dams in the country provide a total storage volume of 3.3 km~3. The Zambia/Tanzania/Kenya interconnector has the top priority among the Southern African Power Pool projects. This project is moving forward very quickly and the three governments are committed to seeing the project commissioned in two to three years. Hydro projects such as Masigira, Upper Kihansi, Rumakali as well as mini hydro plants are continuing to generate interest.
