One of the largest private power projects in sub-Saharan Africa reached financial closure in late 2007, with a group of 10 banks, including the International Finance Corporation, the European Investment Bank and the African Development Bank, providing a total of US$ 682 million in debt financing for the 250 MW Bujagali hydroelectric project on the Nile in Uganda (see also H&D Issue 5, 2007). The project is being undertaken by Bujagali Energy Ltd (BEL), a public-private partnership between the government and the State-owned Uganda Electricity Transmission Company on the one hand and Sithe Global and Industrial Promotion Services as the project's private developer.
