The Board of Directors of Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Eco-nomico e Social (BNDES) has approved BRL 2.6 billion (US$ 1.4 billion) of finance for the construction of the Estreito hydro plant. This is the largest energy project being implemented under the Programme for Accelerated Growth (PAC), and is vital to the country's energy supply from 2010 onwards. The investment will provide for 1087 MW of capacity, to be channelled through the entire National Interconnected System, and will create 22 000 jobs in the construction phase. The electricity generated will be enough to supply a city with 7 million inhabitants.
