The Portuguese civil engineering and construction company, Mota-Engil, announced in late May the signing of an MoU with the Government of Malawi for the construction and operation of two hydropower plants. Mota-Engil said that it would study the feasibility of the schemes, which would be developed and operated as public-private partnerships, but did not provide any financial details of the projects. According to the agreement signed by Mota-Engil and Mota-Engil Engenharia, Mota-Engil Ambiente e Servicos, and Escom-Investments Group, the two hydro projects, which are to be located at sites still to be designated by the Government, would be the object of a concession contract for design, construction, operation, and maintenance. The concessionaire would have the right to sell electricity to the national power company, Mota said. The agreement also states that Martifer Energia-Equipamentos para Energia (also of Portugal) may participate in developing the projects.
