Energem Resources, a renewable energy investment company which focuses on Africa, signed a preliminary agreement on 20 May to acquire a 40 per cent stake in the proposed 900 MW Stieglers Gorge hydro project on Tanzania's Rufiji river. Energem said it had signed an MoU with Infrastructural Development Finance (IDF) to take a stake in the project, in exchange for providing a US$ 1.2 million loan to update studies carried out in the 1980s, and completing a bankable feasibility study on the scheme. The project would take about five years to build, at an estimated cost of $2 billion. Energem, which is listed on London's AIM market and the Toronto Stock Exchange, said it would also assist in raising funds for development and construction of the project. IDF currently holds an 80 per cent stake, and the Tanzanian State-owned Rufiji Basin Development Authority (RUBADA) holds 10 per cent and a private engineering consortium holds the remaining 10 per cent.
