Researchers at Delft Technical University in The Netherlands have demonstrated the feasibility of using kites to exploit wind power. The system, known as Laddermill, consists of a large number of kites, some moving upwards and others downwards. The kites used are a combination of conventional kites and aeroplanes. While a conventional kite climbs easily, it requires a force to bring it down. An aeroplane, on the other hand, requires energy to gain altitude, but decreasing altitude is easier, as the aircraft can glide to the ground.
