Generation from onshore wind in the UK increased by 11 per cent, and generation from offshore wind by 20 per cent, in 2007, and as a result wind became the leading renewable technology in the UK for that year (in terms of electricity generated). Wind-powered generation thus overtook hydro, despite hydro generation being at a new record level in 2007, according to a report by report issued by the UK Government's Department for Business. Electricity generated from all renew-ables as a percentage of total UK electricity generation rose to 5 per cent in 2007, based on the international definition of renewables. In 2006, on the same basis, the increase was 4.5 per cent.
