The authors put forward a number of suggestions aimed at achieving a consistent approach to ensuring the hydraulic safety of embankment dams, based partly on lessons learned from past incidents. Emphasis is placed on the need to cater for unexpected conditions at the planning stage of a dam, and where possible to allow for redundancy in safety elements.
