El Cajon, on the Santiago river in western Mexico, is one of the largest hydro projects in Latin America currently under construction. With an installed generating capacity of 2 x 375 MW, El Cajon is being equipped with the largest turbines ever assembled in Mexico and has one the highest concrete face rockfill dams in the world. As the dam nears completion and preparations for impounding begin, ahead of schedule, this article reviews progress at the various stages of construction to date, as well as the forthcoming milestones.
