In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development produced a landmark environmental document. The Brundtland Report established a direct link between the economy and the environment, stating that the protection of the environment entails that the economic condition of the world's poor be improved. The report also defined and popularized the term sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the people today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Almost 20 years later, we are still struggling with the same environmental concerns, despite the fact that we have practical solutions staring straight at us. What appears to be missing is political will and long-term vision.
