Research in Germany has been investigating the path of water through pools in 'pool-slot' and vertical passage fishways. The various findings will be valuable in optimizing the design of fish passage structures. Numerical modelling of the geometry of pool-slot fishways has shown, for example, that a different type of resting zone is created in the pool, with velocities which are significantly reduced in relation to the main flow through the pool.
