The sixth international conference of the International Association on Electricity Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Afro-Asian Region (AARO), took place in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 7 to 9 June, with the theme 'Development of hydropower: a major source of renewable energy'. It was jointly hosted by the Nepal Electricity Authority, and the Central Board of Irrigation and Power of India. Technical, environmental, financial and legal aspects of large and small hydropower schemes were discussed over three days. Dr J. Karmacharya, MD of the Nepal Electricity Authority and President of AARO, gave the welcome address, and the event was inaugurated by Dr Tulsi Giri, Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers in Nepal. Addresses were given in the opening session by R. Taylor, Executive Director of IHA, and by K. Ohashi, of the World Bank. G.N. Mathur of CBIP, India (co-host of the event) proposed the vote of thanks.
