"In the 21st century, Africa has the energy and drive to succeed, provided the West has the integrity to help it". These powerful words were spoken by Joseph Makoju, Managing Director of the National Electric Power Authority of Nigeria, on behalf of Nigeria's Minister of Power & Steel, in the opening session of the Africa Energy Forum. This year's AEF, organized by EnergyNet of the UK, was held in Barcelona, Spain, from 22 to 24 June. Makoju drew attention to the major challenges to Africa's progress. He noted that the continent represented about 700 million people in 50 countries; major problems affecting many of the African nations were civil wars, conflicts, misplaced priorities, a high incidence of poverty (about 60 million people living on less than $1 a day) and debt burden. But he also noted what he described as a 'wind of change', in the light of emerging democracies, initiatives by organizations such as NEPAD, and efforts to achieve poverty alleviation, which were "placing African countries both individually and inclusively on the path to sustainable growth".
