Carinthia, the province of Austria in which HYDRO 2005 will take place (17-20 October), is an important area of the country for hydropower development, with many major storage and run-of-river developments. In this article, authors from the electricity authority of Carinthia, KELAG, review the history of hydropower development in the region, including refurbishment and upgrading work underway and planned. The major Fragant scheme is described, where a new pressure tunnel and powerhouse is now to be added downstream of Wurtenalm dam.
