Some four thousand years after Turkey commissioned its first dam for water supply in Anatolia, delegates from more than 30 countries who had gathered in Istanbul for the International Symposium 'Water for Development Worldwide' heard that Turkish hydraulic engineers are still full of innovation, refining water resources management and irrigation techniques to improve efficiency and economics, and building some of the world's largest dams. Turkey's history and rich cultural heritage does not only provide the population today with its fine palaces and mosques, but also four millennia of experience of irrigation techniques, hydraulic waterways, dams, and in more recent years, a total of 135 hydro plants providing a capacity of nearly 12,600 MW. Istanbul was thus an extremely appropriate venue for the Symposium, which was hosted by DSI (State Hydraulic Works).
