It is often believed that hydro development entails a conflict between techno-economic and environmental interests. Here we present a pragmatic approach to identifying hydro sites which fulfil both economic and environmental objectives. For an accurate evaluation, the entire river network was classified twice, once according to techno-economic aspects and once according to ecological aspects. Then the evaluation attributes of the river networks were intersected using a GIS programme, to identify economically and environmentally sustainable schemes. This paper describes the methodologies applied, as well as the identification of potential for hydropower expansion, rehabilitation of existing plants and the effects of river revitalisation in Austria.
