Renewable energy sources are an essential component of the future energy mix, according to Claire Durkin (Director and Head of Energy Innovation and Businesses, UK Department of Trade and Industry). She pointed out that the energy situation in the UK was now vastly different from that in the 1970s; coal reserves were now being depleted, and gas and oil were becoming more difficult to extract. In addition, the UK Government was committed to reaching the target of generating 10 per cent of the country's energy from renewable sources by the year 2010. Speaking at the Wave and Tidal Technology Symposium in London in March, organized by the Renewable Power Association (RPA), Ms Durkin emphasized the Government's obligation and stressed its serious commitment.
