Dam construction in Korea began with an earth dam in 330 AD for irrigation. As of 2003, the total number of dams and reservoirs in the country is about 18 000, of which, 206 are classified as large, (greater than 15 m in height or 2000 m in length). This article traces the history of dam construction technology and achievements. Dams have made a major contribution to Korea's economic development and many benefits have been derived from them. This historical review notes the various milestones and challenges in Korean dam engineering.
