In recent decades a major programme of small hydro development has been underway in China, with the principal aim of providing electricity for the rural areas; this programme is still continuing at an impressive rate today, with about 2000 MW of new small hydro capacity being commissioned each year. Progress so far, and the targets for the coming years, are described here. China has abundant small hydropower (SHP) resources, which are economically feasible for development. The exploitable potential amounts to 100 GW, and this is distributed throughout more than 1500 of the nearly 2300 counties in the country. After several years of development, by the end of 2002, China had established 652 'Primary Rural Electrification Counties'.
