Among the many hydroelectric projects currently under construction in China are several pumped-storage schemes designed to meet peak electricity needs and help satisfy the nation's rapid pace of economic development and related demand for energy. One of these is the 1200 MW Xilongchi scheme in northern China. Designed to take advantage of the highest head available in the country and the third highest in the world, the project is outstanding in its design and scope of construction. Shani Wallis visited the project in June 2004 to bring this report.
