During the last 25 years, several hydro projects, particularly in developing countries, have suffered significant problems during construction, sometimes leading to serious delays in completion, commissioning and generation of revenues, and substantial overruns in direct and indirect project costs. In many cases, these problems can be attributed to inadequacies In the bid and contract documents. This article examines the various constituents of typical contract documents and makes practical recommendations regarding their refinement, to facilitate effective construction management and control of costs.
