In a useful and compelling essay in this journal in 2006, Matthew Herbert argued that "The Intelligence Community should recruit epistemological talent and cultivate epistemological skill across its organizations."1 The basic premises he offered made his argument valid and possibly sound, but his position remains open to improvement on at least two counts. First, he was too quick to accept the justified true belief (JTB) theory as the basis of epistemology. Second, he might have said more about the ethics of belief as a useful foundation for the epistemological payoff his recommendations promised. Each of these points is herein considered in turn.
