摘要

In most academic disciplines it is a matter of good craftsmanship to provide a detailed account of the research methodology one uses. Many academic publications in the field of intelligence studies, however, fail to do so. Some of the intelligence scholars undoubtedly consider methodological issues during the research process but do not account for them. Other scholars seem simply unaware of these issues or address them only implicitly. The issues at play include the epistemological and ontological stance of a researcher, the research strategy, the method(s) of data collection, the process of data analysis, and the drawing and verifying of the conclusions. Such a lack of accountability makes it difficult for other researchers to replicate a study, to scrutinize the research and verify its results, or to apply the same study to another empirical dataset. Simultaneously, the field of intelligence studies suffers from a lack of engagement with related disciplines-most notably organizational theory, public admini stration, or sociology-whose studies contain much knowledge that is beneficial to intelligence studies. As a result of this lack of engagement, "intelligence-relevant findings, theories, and frameworks can go unnoticed-sometimes for decades."
