摘要

This paper develops a model to analyse the effect of relationships on firms' innovation performance by drawing on the social capital theory and the knowledge-based view of the firms. Starting from the acknowledgement of the positive externalities emerging in industrial clusters, the model aims at explaining the role of interorganisational relationships (specifically with customers and suppliers) in building the firm's process of innovation. In this perspective, it is hypothesised that external social capital influences the acquisition of knowledge, and that knowledge is a key resource driving the innovation strategy, and, in turn, its performance. The model is tested with some data collected in an Italian cluster. The results suggest that significant benefits for firms' innovation performance can be achieved by fostering social capital in external relationships.
