Building on the literature on dynamic capabilities, this study investigates the relationship between a firm's appropriability regime, its entrepreneurial orientation, and innovation performance using survey data collected among 299 companies. Appropriability regimes are set up to facilitate the erection of barriers to imitation. This study examines two different dimensions of appropriability, namely intellectual property rights and knowledge tacitness. Entrepreneurial orientation reflects the firm's pro-active, innovative and risk-taking characteristics. The hypotheses were tested by means of hierarchical linear regression analysis. The empirical findings imply that entrepreneurial orientation is positively associated with innovation performance, whereas the relationship between the appropriability regime and innovativeness is more complicated.
