Effect of Sm and La off-valent Ion Substitution in BT Ceramics Synthesized by Modified Solid State Route

Modified barium titanate (Ba_(1-x)A xTi_(1-x/4)O_3, where A=Sm and La and x=0.02)/BST & BLT ferroelectric samples were synthesized in single perovskite phase by modified solid state route. For single perovskite phase and dense grain morphology formation, 900℃ and 1300℃ temperatures were optimized as calcination and sintering temperatures, respectively. Room temperature (RT) dielectric constant (ε_r) and dielectric loss (tanδ) of BST and BLT systems at 1 kHz frequency were found to be ~2800, 0.028 and 5200, 0.15, respectively. Normal phase transition with T_c ~ 76℃ was observed in BST system whereas a diffuse phase transition with T_c ~ 85°C was observed in BLT system. Development of well saturated polarization vs. electric field (PE) loops with P_rand E_c ~5.8μC/cm~2, 5.1kV/cm and 1.8μC/cm~2, 1.2kV/cm in BST and BLT systems, respectively suggested their ferroelectric nature. High value of ε_r at RT in BLT system suggested it as a useful material for multilayer capacitor (MLC) applications.
