摘要

Unless rare literature has been photographed and comprehensively described, it is unlikely to be recovered if stolen. A new pioneering solution from Solar Imaging Systems marries technology with the study of paper to enhance the security of rare books and collectibles, whilst doubling-up as a valuable research tool. One of the most prevalent types of international crime is the theft and trafficking of cultural objects, according to Interpol. Among other antiquities, the theft of rare and collectible books accounts for a sizeable percentage of these crimes. In light of this growing trend librarians and curators are re-evaluating security measures to ensure the preservation of rare books for generations to come.
