Modern applications are quite demanding in terms of storage capacities due to the large number of client requests, which most often refer to large data setfors of a diverse nature. This article presents a simulation model prefetching and caching of storage objects under a parallel storage units topology. The data to be stored are defined as variable-sized data blocks, and a. specific cache area is reserved for data prefetchirig and caching. An evolutionary algorithm is proposed for identifying the storage objects to be prefetched, whereas a simulation model is developed to support appropriate parameterization of clients, cache area, and storage units. The parameters defined facilitate the evaluation of expected performance in order to comment on the potential improvements due to prefetching. An experiment is conducted on the storage object prefetching model with artificial workloads of requests under a considered set of parallel storage units; the model shows significant performance improvement with respect to request service times as well as cache and byte hit ratios.
