SUBGRADE STRENGTH CHARACTERIZATION FOR LOW VOLUME ROADS IN INDIA

Elastic moduli of pavement layers are essential inputs for mechanistic design of new pavements and rehabilitation of in-service pavements, of which subgrade is the most important layer. AASHTO has suggested the use of resilient modulus value for characterizing the subgrade, but due to the complexity of conducting the repeated load triaxial tests in the laboratory, different field tests are usually adopted for evaluation of subgrade modulus. Though using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is a rational approach, its extensive use for evaluation of pavements is not affordable for most rural road organizations because of the high initial and maintenance costs associated with the equipment. Low volume road pavements in India generally comprise of one or more granular layers laid over the subgrade and surfaced with thin bituminous carpet. In the present investigation, an effort has been made to correlate the results obtained from the evaluation of the subgrade using FWD with the results of Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests conducted on subgrade. Another correlation was developed between the field DCP value and laboratory CBR determined under field conditions. Using the results from the field DCP and FWD evaluation and laboratory CBR tests, a correlation between the laboratory CBR and the backcalculated subgrade modulus was established. The work reported in this paper is a step in the direction of rationalization of design of rural roads in India.
