Innovative manufacturing: an Australasian perspective

The idea for this special issue was raised in late 2011 when I met with John Middle, the previous Editor of IJPR, at Loughborough University. John highlighted that few articles were being submitted for publication by the authors based in Australia and New Zealand, and asked how we could address this. I suggested that we could target a special issue of IJPR focusing on Australasia, and we finally agreed on 'Innovative Manufacturing' as the theme. Coincidently, I am writing this brief introduction during my visit to Loughborough. In Australia, the manufacturing industry is currently in a sad state. The recent announcement by the three car companies that they will stop production in Australia by 2017 will have a major impact on the whole of the manufacturing sector. As is the case in many other developed countries, the automotive sector in Australia led the rest of the industry in adopting innovative manufacturing practices and became the benchmark for other large, medium and small manufacturers. Knowledge sharing across firms within an industry and across industry sectors has been and will continue to be an important factor in developing innovative manufacturing.
