This panel did not sufficiently illuminate the relationship between psychic reality and the psycho-social problems of children. And, while Dr Houzel is correct that 'the organised aspect of our subjectivity is a vast undertaking ... after all, this is the very object of metapsychology', I believe that it ought to be possible to examine the specific issue associated with the relationship between psycho-social problems and psychic reality with psychoanalytic methods. In my view, the difficulty the panel had with the subject was related to the fact that not-expectable (atypical) situations have not found their way into psychoanalytic thinking. Classical theory depended on Hart-mann's (1956) concept of 'the average expectable environment' for its articulation of personality development and pathogenesis; conceptualising development in terms of drive vicissitudes could not incorporate the impact of the child's social environment. Nor was this problem solved by object-relations theory, where structuralisation is considered to occur through the internalisation of good and bad objects.
