摘要

In response to your enquiry, esteemed Herr Cotta, as to whether a monument ... should be erected to the memory of our Schiller, I can for the present say no more than this...[:] I am convinced that art, should it ally itself with pain, ought to excite the latter only in order to mitigate it and resolve it into higher consoling feelings; and with this in mind I shall seek to represent not so much what we have lost as what remains to us (Goethe to Cotta, 1 June 1805). I am to speak here of my brother, whom ... my eyes no longer behold, but who is yet beside me at night in my dreams, when I have no notion of his decease. So let us keep him in our minds by a bundle of memories, which, however, as may be expected in this company, are confined almost exclusively to his scientific activity (Jacob Grimm's commemorative address for his brother Wilhelm at the Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin on 5 July 1860).
