This image gives a three-dimensional (3D) view of deformation occurring in the Afar region of Northern Ethiopia during a massive dyke intrusion in September 2005. The coloured interference fringes are formed by differencing the phase in two satellite radar images, acquired in May and October 2005 by the European Space Agency's Envisat satellite, and are essentially contours of surface deformation with an interval of 3 cm. The image shows movement of several metres on each side of the 60-km-long Dabbahu segment of the Arabia-Nubia plate boundary, marked by a red line. The 3D image was created by draping the interferogram on topography from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission using Google Earth~(TM). Elastic modelling of this data set shows that 2.5 km~3 of magma was intruded into the upper 10 km of crust along a dyke, which was up to 8 m thick. At the same time, Dabbahu and Gabho volcanoes subsided, and probably fed magma into the dyke system. The intrusion of the dyke was accompanied by a small-volume silicic eruption between Dabbahu and Gabho volcanoes, and an energetic seismic swarm, with more than 160 earthquakes detected by the global network in a 10-day period (Wright et al., 2006).
