The coastal zones of the world, defined as within 100 km of the coast, are home to about 60% of the world's population (Vitousek et al. 1997). From recreation to fisheries the economic value of this zone in terms of goods and services is a significant factor in the global economy (Costanza et al. 1997). Coastal zone populations are continuing to increase and this explosive growth has degraded the coastal ecosystems and the estuaries that feed them (National Research Council (NRC) 2000). Estuaries - the transitional zone where salt water from the sea mixes with fresh water flowing from the land - are highly productive ecosystems. They provide habitat for terrestrial and aquatic species, process nutrients and toxic substances, and provide enormous recreational opportunities. However, as human disturbance overtakes the estuary's ability to process pollutants and cleanse itself, beach closings, algal blooms, fish kills and habitat loss become common (Conley 1999, Boesch et al. 2001). Coastal ecosystems are also susceptible to climatic impacts and change, including sea-level rise and a recently-documented increase in tropical storm and hurricane activity (Goldenberg et al. 2001). Climatic and anthropogeni-cally-induced stressors strongly interact as they alter coastal physical, chemical and biotic resources (Paerl et al. 2005).
