The first international 'IsRivers' conference was held in Lyon, France from 26 to 28 June 2012, focused on Integrative Science for Rivers. The aim of this conference was to build bridges between river managers and scientists. With 500 participants from 32 different countries, 100 oral communications and 70 posters, half from river managers and stakeholders, the conference generated fresh dialogues about sustainable management issues for 55 large rivers around the world. This conference was particularly important in Europe where state members are implementing the Water Framework Directive. It provided a forum for exchanging experiences and knowledge between technical experts and on-the-ground practitioners.
