Public transportation is increasingly called upon to solve pressing issues like reducing externalities of private mobility, encouraging sustainable mode choice patterns and satisfying social mobility obligations. User experiences of service quality have been identified as an essential ingredient to promote the increase in ridership required for public transportation to begin to absolve this important role. The understanding and effective measurement of service quality has, as a consequence, become a vibrant area of research in the transportation field. The articles included in this special issue investigate new tools and approaches to assess the service quality and performance of local public transport. The contributions target different levels of analysis, ranging from a theoretical focus, to methodological developments and applied case studies providing evidence from real life public transport reforms focusing on service quality improvement.
