According to Pope Innocent III, writing early in the thirteenth century, the Eucharist both 'signifies and effects ecclesiastical unity' (de sacro altaris mysterio, IV.36). According to this even-handed approach, unity must already be sufficiently present for eucharistic communion not to be a sham, while the participants may yet look towards the continuation and furtherance of that unity as a result of their sacramental sharing. Thus it is not surprising that the Eucharist should have figured as a touchstone in the modern ecumenical movement by which institutionally divided claimants to ecclesiality have sought to regain unity among themselves.
