摘要

Stephen Davis is a historical explorer, tracking doctrine in the wild. With all the patience and dedication of a wildlife photographer, he has captured images of doctrine embedded in its natural habitats: in monastic, ecclesial and popular practices, in material culture, in evolving social and political circumstances. His book is not the place to go for major new insights into the conceptual anatomy of the doctrines he tracks - details of how the hypostasis is connected to the phusis, and so on - but it is a remarkable guide to what some of those doctrines have meant, how they have been inhabited and embodied by generation after generation of Egyptian Christians. With painstaking and exemplary scholarship, he gives us a series of glimpses of the Coptic Church in late antiquity and the early medieval period, letting us see how a deeply rooted tradition of Alexandrian Christology, in non-Chalcedonian mode, was passed on, practised, defended, adapted and transformed -how, in short, it was and is a living and a lived tradition for the Coptic Church.
