Henri Lefebvre wrote or edited 71 books in his long life (1901-1991) (Elden, 2004). The surge in interest in his work among English-speaking scholars during the past two decades has been based on just a handful of these works, however. As eclectic as he was prolific, Lefebvre poses a daunting challenge to anyone who would attempt to synthesize or even summarize his ideas, a challenge made still greater by his writing style (which can be opaque and digressive) and by copyright restrictions exercised by his survivors (which have delayed or prevented translation of much of his corpus).
