Application of Virtual Reality in Marine Search and Rescue Simulator

As an important application field of virtual reality (VR) technology and a typical man-in-loop simulation system, Marine Search and Rescue Simulator (MASRES) is an important equipment of maritime analysis, marine search and rescue (SAR) training, ship maneuvering training and waterway project research etc. MASRES is based on the research of Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator and GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) simulator. This paper presents three realism indexes which are related with the "3I" characteristics of a VR system to evaluate MASRES: behavioral realism, environmental realism and physical realism. The paper also introduces some advanced technologies used in MASRES such as: multi-projection stereo displaying system, wide-FOV immersive system of curve screen seamless projection using software edge-blending technique and CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) system using PC-cluster etc. The system can create a multi-projection virtual environment with strong immersion effect and can provide a realistic simulation system with better environmental realism, physical realism and behavioral realism. We also discuss the system architecture of MASRES in details.
