In a surprise move last December Danish wind turbine manufacturers Vestas Wind Systems and NEG Micon announced they were to merge. The new company, just called Vestas, is now the largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world, with 35 per cent share of the worldwide market. The merger also created Denmark's largest industrial concern, with a workforce of over 8,500 people. The company is now based at NEG Micon's old headquarters in Randers. The MD of the new company is Svend Sogaard, who previously worked at Vestas and the deputy CEO, Torben Bjerre-Madsen, comes from NEG Micon. The merger came at a time just after both companies had issued profit warnings and amid concerns about the adequacy of their finances. Whilst the companies involved were happy to say it was a move to create a world leader that would take capacity out of the market and reduce costs, some observers saw it as a defensive move, a closing of ranks to keep competition down and foreign competitors away.
