Twenty five years ago, on July 13 1977, New York experienced a massive power outage. Dozens of stores were targeted by thieves and looting was rampant in several neighbourhoods. Scores of cars were stolen from a single dealership in The Bronx. More than 3,700 people were arrested during this city-wide crime spree. More than 1,000 fires were started and 1,700 false alarms reported. At the time, Consolidated Edison, the utility responsible for the outage, was strongly criticised for what happened. But many considered the power problems to be the result of an unfortunate chain of events resulting from five huge lightning strikes during storms that night.
