The past 25 years have been an eventful time for gas turbine manu-facturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Back in 1977 its newest products were the likes of the MW-701B2 F-class rated at 79.2MW/50Hz. The technical changes over the past quarter century in this sector have been revolutionary, with significant advances in both materials and cooling technology contributing to rapid progress. In the 1970s, the engineering technology behind these products used many large steam turbine practices. The gas turbine (GT) compressor design used shrunk-on wheels on a drum, similar to steam turbine designs. Also, many of the rotor, compressor blading and turbine blading materials used steam turbine practices - turbine blades, for example, were forged instead of investment cast. The turbine forward stages also used simple cooling methods such as single cavity cooling for turbine vane and multi-hole cooling for forged blade.
