Brazil is big on hydropower-one of the world's biggest producers, around 90 per cent of total generation capacity. It is also home to Itaipu, still the largest hydro-electric plant in the world at 12.6GW. The country's total hydro potential is estimated at 260GW. Surprisingly, only about 24 per cent of this total is in operation or under construction. Many new sites have been identified with the north of Brazil the most prospective (114GW). Unfortunately, this region is where the rain shortage of the last few years has been felt the most. Currency depreciation, price regulation and a power crisis that saw rationing brought in from June 2001 to March this year have all have left their mark. The crisis in electricity generation was brought about by the below-average rainfall, leaving reservoirs running on low and many hydro plant unable to operate.
