摘要

The global population is growing and, as it does, the amount of waste produced both on a domestic and industrial basis also increases. In the EU alone, over two billion tonnes of waste is produced annually and from 1990-1996, the annual growth rate was in the region of 10 per cent. Traditionally, the most common methods of waste disposal were either to bury it, or dispose of it at sea, but as concerns about the environment grow, these options are no longer acceptable and alternatives need to be found. One possible solution is to convert waste into energy.
