It would take a brave man to forecast the future growth in telecoms traffic. In recent years the industry has mushroomed out of all proportion -fuelled by the growth of the internet and the public hunger for mobile communications.rnThe load created by the growth in internet traffic is particularly hard to gauge. For example, in 1996-7, there were 17 million new phone subscribers in China. In the same year there were 250,000 new internet users, but the load on the network created by the new internet users could be 10 or 100 times that created by the phone subscribers. While the majority of subscribers are content with good quality voice connection - a sign that the explosion is still in its infancy - it is data transfer that makes the market tick.
