As the issues surrounding global climate change continue to have an increasing influence on national energy policies, particularly in Europe and the US, the use of renewable fuel-sources has started to move from an eccentric marginal image towards a practical mainstream part of the energy-mix. On a world scale, statutory requirements for emissions levels of combustion gases are becoming ever more stringent. This in turn is creating greater pressure at national and. international levels for the development of viable strategies to stabilise CO_2 emissions, making the use of renewable sources of energy increasingly attractive. Although wind energy systems are growing at a faster rate than any other, the use of biomass fuels for power and heating applications are also gaining prominence.
