Environmental mainstreaming is one of those pieces of Brussels jargon that takes on a life of its own, seeming to become the end in itself, rather than being a means to promote a worthy goal; in this case, of creating a clean and healthy Europe.rnWhen officials at the European Commission latch onto a term such as this, their papers and briefings become liberally sprinkled with these words, as if everyone in the outside world should know what they are talking about.Which, of course, they do not. In short, environmental mainstreaming is about knitting concerns about the environment into other policy areas where the EU has an impact. Most directorate generals have been reviewing their activities with this in mind and now energy policy is about to take centre stage.
